How to Play Book of Ra: Rules and Paytable
Choose your total bet, keep all ten lines on and press Start. Wins pay left to right on the lines; the book replaces any symbol and pays anywhere. Three or more books give ten free games with one expanding symbol. After a win you may gamble it on a card colour or collect it.
The screen and the buttons
The game has five reels with three symbols each. Under them are MENU, LINES, TOTAL BET, a message field, MAX BET, AUTO and START. Line numbers on both sides show where the ten lines begin. Everything you need is on one screen.
| Button | What it does |
|---|---|
| MENU | Opens Paytable & Info, settings and help; in real-money versions also deposit and exit |
| LINES | Number of active lines, 1–10 |
| TOTAL BET | Stake for the whole spin, split across the active lines |
| MAX BET | Sets the highest bet allowed and spins — use with care |
| AUTO | Automatic spins; not available in every country |
| START | Spins once; after a win it also collects |

How wins are paid
A win needs identical symbols on a played line, starting from the leftmost reel. Explorer, pharaoh mask, statue and scarab pay from two in a row; card symbols from three. Only the highest win per line is paid, and scatter wins from books are added to line wins.
The paytable inside the game always shows wins for your current bet and number of lines. Below we convert them into multiples of the total bet with all ten lines played, so they work at any stake: at a €0.50 bet, multiply by 0.5.

Examples at a €1 total bet: three scarabs on a line pay €3; five pharaoh masks pay €200; five explorers pay €500; three books anywhere pay €2 and start the free games.
The ten win lines
Line 1 runs across the middle row, line 2 across the top and line 3 across the bottom. Lines 4 and 5 form V shapes, and lines 6 to 10 zigzag between rows. All lines read left to right.

If you lower the number of lines, the bet per line stays and the total bet falls — but you also lose the chance of wins on the inactive lines, including expanded symbols in free games. There is no strategic reason to play fewer lines; if you want a smaller stake, lower the total bet instead.
The book: wild and scatter
The book substitutes for every symbol on a line, so it completes line wins. It is also the scatter: three, four or five books anywhere pay 2×, 20× or 200× the total bet and trigger ten free games.
A single spin can pay both ways: books helping a line win and books paying as scatters are counted separately and added up. The book itself never expands; in free games it keeps the same two jobs and can retrigger the feature.
Free games with the special expanding symbol
At the start of free games one regular symbol is chosen at random. During the ten games, after normal wins are paid, if enough of it is visible for a win, it expands to cover three positions on each reel where it appears and pays on all played lines, even on reels that are not next to each other.

Worked example
Bet €1, special symbol: explorer. In one free game, explorers appear on reels 1, 3 and 4. First, any normal line wins are paid. Then the three explorers expand to fill reels 1, 3 and 4. Three explorers pay 10× the bet for each line, and the expanded symbols sit on all ten lines — so the expansion pays 10 × €1 = €10 on every line, €100 in total. With explorers on all five reels the same game would pay 500× on each of the ten lines.
The same expansion with the 10 symbol pays far less: three tens pay 0.5× per line, so €5 for all ten lines at a €1 bet. Which symbol you get is pure chance.
The gamble (risk) game
After a line win you can gamble it: a face-down card appears and you guess red or black. A correct guess doubles the win; a wrong one loses it. The rules cap the amount you can gamble (€500 at a €1 stake in the demo) and disable gambling during autoplay.
The gamble keeps the game’s return the same on average, but it turns a sure win into a coin flip. Use it only with amounts you are happy to lose, and remember that in some countries the feature is restricted in licensed versions.
Other rules worth knowing
- Free games are played at the bet and lines of the spin that triggered them.
- Free games can be won again during free games.
- The paytable always shows prizes for the currently selected bet and lines.
- The minimum possible bet in the demo rules is €0.01; casinos set their own limits.
- “Malfunction voids all pays and plays” — a standard clause in every licensed slot.

Problems and what to do
Misunderstandings about the rules cause most “the game did not pay” complaints. Check these points before contacting support.
They must sit on a played line starting from reel one. Symbols on reels 2–4 or on an inactive line do not pay.
It expands only if enough of it is on screen to form a win — for example three of a card symbol, two for premium symbols.
Free games use the bet of the triggering spin; changing the bet afterwards does not affect them.
Your country or casino may disable them. That is a legal setting, not a fault.
Questions
How many lines does Book of Ra have?
Book of Ra deluxe has ten lines, which you can reduce from 10 down to 1. The original Classic online version has nine. We recommend playing all lines.
Do wins have to start on the first reel?
Yes, line wins count from left to right starting on reel one. Only scatter wins from the book and the expanding symbol in free games pay regardless of position.
Can the book be the expanding symbol?
No. The special expanding symbol is chosen from the regular symbols, and the rules state it cannot be replaced by the scatter during free games.
How many free games can I win?
Ten per trigger. Three or more books during free games add another ten, played at the same bet and lines.
What is the minimum bet in Book of Ra?
The demo rules give €0.01 as the minimum possible bet. Casinos set their own ranges, and some countries cap the maximum, such as €1 per spin in Germany.
